International Traveling Nurse
An International Traveling Nurse refers to any nurse whose basic nursing education occurred outside the United States.
An American Travel Nurse on assignment in Europe, Australia or any other country will also have to meet requirements of that country. More coming soon.
It is important to understand that each state is responsible for a nurse license within that state.

An International Traveling Nurse,from countries,that are not part of the NAFTA agreement must meet requirements in three areas to work in the U.S.

Overview of Education Requirements
Each state regulates their own nursing licenses. The state in which you are applying must recognize the education of an International Nurse. The state is responsible for evaluating your education and qualifications as a nurse. You will be required to write the C.G.F.N.S (Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools) exam. This is made available in different locations three times a year. Locations are available on their website.

Overview of English ProficiencyAn International Travel Nurse coming to the U.S must be able to understand but also speak English in order to practice safely in the U.S. Below is a list of exams that you may be required to complete depending on your situation. TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication)Test listening and reading.www.ets.org TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)Used as an evaluation of English proficiency and readiness for academic programs, as well as for placement in language programs. www.toefl.org TSE (Test of Spoken English)Designed mainly to assess proficiency in oral communications. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) www.ielts.orgA test of English language proficiency designed to access the ability of applicants who intend to study or train in English speaking countries. Applicants who were educated in Australia, Canada (except Quebec) Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom are exempt from the English competency requirements.
Overview of Immigration
The requirements for a foreign nurse seeking permanent residence are as follows. An I-140 petition must be filed by the U.S. employer, satisfactory completion of a Visa Screen, have an unrestricted permanent license and pass the NCLEX –RN or the qualifying exam of the CGFNS.Immigration Laws are complicated. It is recommended that a International traveling nurse hire immigration lawyers to guide them through the process. This procedure can be lengthy and every nurse’s situation is unique and handled accordingly.
